Defence minister: Canada has yet to finalize decision on US fighter jets

Canada is continuing to reassess its planned purchase of 88 Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II aircraft, with Defence Minister David McGuinty confirming on Monday that the review process remains ongoing. He noted that Ottawa is also exploring the possibility of acquiring fighter jets from other international suppliers as part of the evaluation.

The proposed deal, valued at C$19 billion (approximately $13.9 billion), was first announced in early 2023. However, in March 2025, Prime Minister Mark Carney ordered a comprehensive review by military officials, citing concerns that Canada may be too dependent on the United States for defence procurement.

The reassessment reflects a broader effort by the Canadian government to diversify its defence partnerships while ensuring the country secures the most suitable aircraft for its long-term security needs.
