US Basketball Player Held in Indonesia Over Cannabis Gummies Appeals for Freedom

American basketball player Jarred Shaw, whose professional career has taken him across more than 20 teams worldwide, is currently serving a prison sentence in Indonesia after being convicted under the country’s strict narcotics laws.

The 35-year-old from Texas was arrested after authorities accused him of importing 132 cannabis gummies. Shaw has stated that the products were intended for medical use to help manage symptoms of Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the digestive tract. He claims the substance was used to ease pain and inflammation associated with the illness.

Indonesia enforces some of the toughest drug laws in the world, where trafficking offences can carry the death penalty. In Shaw’s case, the court in December found him guilty of a lesser charge of possession. He was sentenced to 26 months in prison and is currently detained in Tangerang, where he had been playing for the local Hawks basketball club in the Indonesian Basketball League.

Shaw, a former college player for Oklahoma State and Utah State, told Reuters that his health has significantly deteriorated since his incarceration, describing his condition as worsening due to limited medical support. He expressed concern that continued detention could lead to long-term or permanent damage.

The American athlete is now appealing for international attention and pressure on Indonesian authorities, hoping for an early release on humanitarian grounds given his medical condition.

The case has drawn attention to Indonesia’s strict drug enforcement policies and the risks faced by foreign nationals under its legal system, particularly in cases involving controlled substances used for medical purposes.
