Russia Steps In to Aid Sri Lanka During Energy Strain

Russia has indicated its readiness to supply key energy resources—including fuel, natural gas, and coal—to Sri Lanka, regardless of whether the island nation is experiencing an energy crisis.

According to a statement from Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, the assurance was provided by Russian Deputy Energy Minister Roman Marshavin during discussions with Minister Bimal Ratnayake in Russia.

Marshavin also reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s broader development initiatives. He noted that Moscow is prepared to extend substantial assistance to help ease current energy supply challenges, particularly those linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

The Russian side has agreed to help meet Sri Lanka’s immediate fuel requirements, with arrangements potentially covering supply needs for April and May, while also addressing any future shortages. Officials highlighted the importance of ensuring the timely release and distribution of fuel stocks, with plans to streamline processes in line with agreements between Russian firms and the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC).

In addition to fuel and gas, Russia has also expressed its willingness to provide coal to support Sri Lanka’s power generation needs.

The statement further noted that Russia remains supportive of Sri Lanka’s long-term development goals and is keen to contribute to sustainable growth initiatives across the country.
