At just 15 years old, Hesali Peiris is already carving out her place as one of Sri Lanka’s most promising young motorcycle racing talents — a fearless competitor driven by passion, legacy, and ambition.
Representing Sri Lanka on the international stage, Hesali has competed at the Asia Cup of Circuit Racing, going head-to-head with some of the region’s top riders. Her determination and skill have earned her the No. 1 national ranking, securing her spot as Sri Lanka’s official representative for the 2025 Asian Circuit Racing Championship.
A Legacy on Two Wheels
For Hesali, racing is more than just a sport — it’s part of her identity.
Her journey is deeply rooted in family tradition. Her grandfather was a respected motorcycle racer and tuner, while her father followed closely in those mechanical footsteps, earning national recognition in 2011 as Sri Lanka’s Best Tuner. Though her father never pursued racing professionally, his passion for the sport became the foundation for Hesali’s own journey.
Every time she steps onto the track, Hesali carries that legacy forward — blending heritage with her own rising talent.
Rising Through the Ranks
Hesali’s breakthrough came through a women’s motorsports development initiative introduced under the leadership of Shane Gunawardena at FMSSL. Initially missing the first round of selections, she later joined a training session where her natural ability quickly stood out.
Recognising both her potential and her racing lineage, Gunawardena opened doors for her to train professionally — a turning point that set her on the path to international competition.
Dominating the Local Circuit
At the recently concluded Rotherham Circuit Meet Round 1, Hesali proved why she is considered a rising star.
Competing against experienced riders such as Nikila Pathirage and Chenuka Caldera, along with other Asian-level competitors, she delivered a standout performance. With confidence and precision, she overtook seasoned racers and emerged as the top contender, reinforcing her position as Sri Lanka’s leading young rider.
Her victory ensures that across all three Asian rounds — in Thailand, Taiwan, and the Philippines — Sri Lanka’s flag will be represented by a bold and determined young athlete.
Balancing Books and Bikes
Despite her demanding racing schedule, Hesali remains committed to her education. A Grade 10 student at Daybridge International School, she credits her teachers and classmates for supporting her dual journey.
Balancing academics and motorsports is no easy feat, but Hesali approaches both with discipline and focus — qualities that define her both on and off the track.
Dreams Beyond the Track
While her immediate goal is success in international racing, Hesali’s long-term vision extends far beyond competition.
Inspired by Spanish rider María Herrera and Ducati Corse General Manager Gigi Dall’Igna, she dreams of becoming a MotoGP Team Manager one day.
Her plan is clear: complete her studies, pursue degrees in Engineering and Business Management, and combine technical expertise with leadership skills to manage a professional racing team. Ultimately, she hopes to play a key role in developing opportunities for women in motorsports.
Driven by Purpose
What motivates Hesali most is the honour of representing Sri Lanka on the global stage.
Competing against riders from countries like Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, India, and the Philippines pushes her to constantly improve. Each race is not just a competition — but a learning experience that brings her closer to her dreams.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Hesali’s message to young girls in Sri Lanka is simple but powerful: believe in yourself and chase your passion.
In a sport still dominated by men, she is determined to break barriers and inspire more girls to step into motorsports. Her journey is already proof that with dedication and courage, anything is possible.
The Road Ahead
Looking ahead, Hesali has her sights set on competing in the FIM Women’s Motorcycling World Championship and potentially entering Moto3 within the next five years.
With ambitions to join elite pathways like the Red Bull Rookies Cup and the Asia Talent Cup, she is working relentlessly to reach the highest levels of the sport.
From a young girl inspired by her family’s legacy to a national racing sensation, Hesali Peiris is not just chasing victory — she’s redefining what’s possible for the next generation of Sri Lankan athletes.
