Zootopia 2 has raced to the top of the global box office, becoming the highest-grossing animated Motion Picture Association (MPA) film of all time after overtaking Inside Out 2. The sequel to the 2016 Oscar-winning hit has now earned $1.703 billion worldwide, ranking as the ninth biggest film in global box-office history, Disney announced on Sunday.
The film’s success gives Walt Disney Studios the top three animated MPA releases ever, with Zootopia 2 leading the list, followed by Inside Out 2 and Frozen 2. The movie has also set multiple records, including the fastest animated and PG-rated film to reach $1 billion and the biggest animated opening weekend globally.
Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard and produced by Yvett Merino, Zootopia 2 reunites fan-favourite characters Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde in a new mystery that takes them across unexpected parts of the animal metropolis. The film continues its strong theatrical run worldwide.
