Jaffna District MP Ramanathan Archuna sparked outrage today with remarks widely condemned as homophobic. Speaking to reporters, he declared:
“You can call me an idiot, but at least I am not gay.”
Archuna alleged that “lesbians, gays, and bisexuals are within the government” and accused them of “promoting lesbianism” after visits to the United States.
Referring to the recent release of controversial containers, he claimed:
“Those involved may have feelings toward the men sitting next to them, but I don’t. That is a mental disease. I can treat them.”
He further stated that he was “willing to treat anyone” he described as suffering from “sex-related psychological disorders.”
In recent weeks, the MP has been outspoken against LGBTQ+ tourism, after the government briefly considered promoting it. The policy was later reversed by the Tourism Ministry following backlash from various groups.
Archuna’s comments have drawn sharp criticism from rights advocates, who argue such rhetoric fuels stigma and discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community.
