Winter storm triggers 100-car pileup on Michigan highway

Several people were injured after a massive pileup involving around 100 vehicles on Interstate 196 in western Michigan on Monday morning, triggered by snowy and icy conditions. Michigan State Police said the crash was reported at about 10:19 a.m., with 30 to 40 semi-trucks among those involved, though the exact cause is still under investigation.

Bitter cold and strong winds worsened the situation, with temperatures near minus 10 degrees and blowing snow severely reducing visibility. Authorities warned the conditions could become life-threatening for motorists stranded for long periods.

Buses were used to take stranded drivers to Hudsonville High School for warmth and safety, officials said. Police urged the public to avoid travel where possible, warning that road conditions remain extremely hazardous.
