Indian cricket star Virat Kohli has reportedly informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of his desire to retire from Test cricket, according to The Indian Express. However, BCCI officials are urging him to reconsider, especially with a critical five-match Test series in England approaching next month.
Sources close to the board said, “He has made up his mind and has informed the board… but he has yet to respond to their request to rethink the decision.”
Kohli’s potential retirement comes just days after Rohit Sharma stepped away from Test cricket, raising concerns about India’s middle-order experience. If both senior players exit the format, younger talents like KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant will shoulder the responsibility in England.
Kohli, 36, has had an illustrious Test career, scoring 9,230 runs in 123 matches at an average of 46.85. However, in the last five years, his performance has dipped slightly, with 1,990 runs in 37 games and three centuries.
He reportedly began reflecting on his red-ball future during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia earlier this year, following a lean patch after a century in the opening Test.
The final decision now rests with Kohli, and the cricket world waits to see if one of the game’s modern greats will walk away from the longest format.
