Video: SsangYong Torres ‘Coupe’ previewed

[ad_1]

Ahead of its 70th birthday celebration, SsangYong has given a first glimpse at its next model – a coupe-styled SUV based on the petrol and electric Torres.

A video released by KG Mobility – the new name for SsangYong in its home country of South Korea – has shown off a sleeker version of its Torres mid-sized SUV.

Referred to as the J120, the new SsangYong is expected to be released in 2024 – with local media speculating it may be called the Torres Coupe.

For reference, the standard Torres petrol SUV has the model code J100 – while the electric EVX carries the U100 designation.

It is unclear if the sleeker Torres – which is not as ‘coupe-like’ as BMW or Audi ‘coupe SUVs’, but is not as upright as the regular Torres – will be powered by petrol or electricity, however its model code suggests the former.

In the video, the car maker refers to its South Korean heritage by borrowing the four characters found on the country’s flag, and reinterpreting them as a wheel, a car, a road, and a crosswalk – with those patterns echoed throughout the vehicle’s design.

As previously reported by Drive in December 2023, spy photos of a mysterious coupe-styled SUV from SsangYong sparked rumours of an Actyon successor – however, the vehicle in those previous spy photos is vastly different to the Torres Coupe shown in the video.

Details of the Torres EVX were revealed in April 2023, with the SUV using a 73.4kWh battery pack supplied by BYD – offering a claimed range of between 420 and 500 kilometres – feeding a 150kW electric motor on the front axle.

The Torres-based electric ute is also expected to offer a claimed driving range of up to 500 kilometres unladen.

While little is known about the Torres Coupe, local reports say more details will be announced on 4 March 2024, with a mid-year launch slated for South Korea.
