Veteran film director Sena Samarasinghe passes away

Veteran film director Sena Samarasinghe has passed away at the age of 89.

Born on November 25, 1937, in Randeniya, Kegalle, Nandasena Samarasinghe was popularly known as Sena Samarasinghe after gaining recognition in Sri Lankan cinema. He is also a relative of the popular film actor Bandu Samarasinghe.

Sena Samarasinghe received his education at Bandarawela, Gurutalawa, St. Thomas’ College, where he excelled in sports and demonstrated remarkable leadership skills, becoming an exemplary student.

After completing his formal education, Sena Samarasinghe developed a strong interest in cinema, encouraged by his close friendship with Gamini Fonseka, a prominent figure in the film industry.

He dedicated himself to advancing Sinhala cinema into a golden era, contributing significantly as a filmmaker.

His cinematic journey began in 1973 with the production of the film “Sadahatama Oba Mage” in collaboration with Milton Jayawardena.

Through this film, Bandu Samarasinghe made his debut as a character actor. The film featured popular actors and actresses of the time, including Gamini Fonseka, Malini Fonseka and Joe Abeywickrama and was skillfully crafted.

Following the production of “Sadahatama Oba Mage”, Sena Samarasinghe made his directorial debut in 1974 with the film “Kasthuri Suwanda”, which also became a notable success in popular cinema.
