Esteemed actress, journalist, and former radio news presenter, Ramya Wanigasekara, passed away on the morning of Friday, March 8, as confirmed by family sources. At the time of her demise, she was 73 years old.
Wanigasekara marked her debut in stage drama in 1976 with a minor role in ‘Hasthiraja Mahaththaya’. Her breakthrough came in the 1978 production, ‘Mana Ranjana Weda Warjana’. Throughout her career, she showcased her talent in various stage dramas, such as ‘Kelani Palama’, ‘Ahasin Wetunu Minissu’, ‘Jailer Unnahe’, ‘Raja Kathawa’, ‘Muhudu Puththu’, and ‘Siri Sangabo’.
In 1980, Wanigasekara embarked on her radio journey as a host with Radio Ceylon, maintaining the role of a regular news anchor until her retirement in 2006. Subsequently, she contributed to the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation on a contractual basis, serving as a relief newscaster.
Beyond the stage and radio, Wanigasekara left her mark in television dramas, featuring in productions like ‘Koombiyo’, ‘Ahas Gawwa’, ‘Denuwara Menike’, ‘Kande Gedara’, and ‘Yes Boss’. Her multifaceted contributions to the world of entertainment and journalism have left an indelible legacy.
