Venezuelan opposition leader and 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado is set to visit the White House on Thursday for a meeting with President Donald Trump, a senior U.S. official told CNN.
Her trip comes amid heightened political tension following recent U.S. military strikes in Caracas and the capture of Nicolás Maduro. With Vice President Delcy Rodríguez now serving as acting president, Trump has so far avoided endorsing Machado’s leadership prospects, saying earlier this month that she lacks broad support.
Machado has hinted she would be willing to offer her Nobel Peace Prize to Trump—a gesture he called an “honor”—though the Nobel Institute has made clear the award cannot be transferred. When asked whether her offer might change his stance on Venezuela’s political future, Trump said he would need to speak with her first.
Despite his hesitation toward Machado, Trump has signaled openness to engaging with Rodríguez and recently halted a planned second round of military action, citing improved cooperation and the release of political prisoners. Still, his proposal for U.S. energy companies to invest heavily in Venezuela has been met with resistance, with industry leaders expressing doubts about long-term stability.
