In a stunning debut that has captured global attention, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest player in IPL history, smashing his first ball for six and nearly taking Rajasthan Royals to victory.
Cricket history was made when Vaibhav Suryavanshi, just 14 years old, stepped onto the field for the Rajasthan Royals and became the youngest-ever player in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The left-handed opener made an instant impact by hitting his very first ball for six, a moment that electrified fans across the world.
Opening the innings in Rajasthan Royals’ thrilling two-run loss to Lucknow Super Giants, Suryavanshi showcased fearless strokeplay, scoring 34 off 20 balls. His innings included two sixes and three fours, with particularly strong shots down the ground. His partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal yielded 85 runs, laying a strong foundation for the chase of 181.
Despite his youth, Suryavanshi batted with poise and aggression. He was eventually stumped off South African all-rounder Aiden Markram in the ninth over, but not before leaving a lasting impression.
This historic debut saw Suryavanshi break the record previously held by spinner Prayas Rai Burman, who debuted at age 16 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2019.
Rajasthan appeared to be in control with Jaiswal continuing the momentum, scoring 74 runs. However, a late collapse and a tight final over from Avesh Khan turned the tide, helping Lucknow Super Giants seal a dramatic win by defending nine runs in the final over, with Rajasthan finishing on 178-5.
Who is Vaibhav Suryavanshi?
Vaibhav Suryavanshi was picked up for ₹1.1 crore (approx. £103,789) in the IPL auction following a fierce bidding war, becoming the youngest signing in league history. At just 13 years old, he made headlines last October with a 58-ball century for India Under-19s against Australia in a Youth Test.
The young prodigy also impressed in the Under-19 Asia Cup, scoring 176 runs at an average of 44, and represents Bihar in first-class cricket. Suryavanshi debuted in the Ranji Trophy at just 12, and has since played five matches, scoring 100 runs with a top score of 41.
