The first film, Paangshu (English title: Earth), directed by Visakesa Chandrasekaram, unfolds the poignant tale of Babanona, portrayed by the acclaimed Nita Fernando, a launderer from one of Sri Lanka’s lowest castes. Summoned to an identification parade, Babanona confronts painful memories of her son’s abduction during the 1988/89 insurgency. As the narrative unfurls within the dilapidated confines of a courthouse, secrets buried deep within the conflict emerge, compelling audiences to confront the aftermath of Sri Lanka’s turbulent past.

The film has garnered international acclaim, with lead actress Nita Fernando clinching the Best Actress award at the 2019 Nice International Film Festival, alongside other accolades for costume design and direction. Paangshu has made waves at prestigious film festivals worldwide, offering a raw and gripping portrayal of a nation grappling with its history.

Following Paangshu, audiences will be treated to Munnel (English title: Sand), also directed by Visakesa Chandrasekaram. This 102-minute feature follows Rudran, an ex-Tamil militant, as he returns home from detention in search of his missing lover, Vaani. Set against the backdrop of post-war Sri Lanka, Rudran’s journey intertwines with his mother’s unique ability to foresee the fate of others, leading him on a pilgrimage to seek solace and reunion.

Munnel has captivated audiences globally, earning accolades such as the Tiger Jury Award at the 2023 International Film Festival of Rotterdam and the Best Film award at the 2023 ImagineIndia Film Festival of Barcelona. With its deeply evocative narrative and powerful performances, Munnel promises an unforgettable cinematic experience.
