Unstable weather in UAE: Rain, thunder to hit country as temperatures drop drastically

Dubai and several parts of the UAE are gearing up for a period of unstable weather next week, with everything from light showers to heavy downpours, thunder, hail and a significant drop in temperatures expected.

According to the National Center of Meteorology (NCM), cloud cover will begin spreading across the country from Friday, marking the start of a multi-day weather system that will peak between December 16 and 19.

Dr. Ahmed Habib, meteorologist at the NCM, explained that the shift will be caused by multiple weather systems merging over the region. Low-pressure extensions from the Red Sea and Arabian Sea will push moisture toward the UAE, while another low-pressure system in the upper atmosphere will approach from the Middle East.

As a result, early cloud development is expected inland and over the sea on Friday night before gradually spreading to coastal and northern areas by Sunday, bringing moderate to heavy rainfall.

Scattered showers, strong winds and dusty conditions

Changing wind directions—ranging from south-easterly to north-westerly—may also stir up dust in exposed regions. The northern emirates are expected to experience the strongest rainfall.

From December 15 to 19, almost the entire country, including major cities such as Abu Dhabi and Dubai, will experience rainfall. Some regions, especially in the north and east, may see thunder and hail due to convective clouds.

Authorities advise residents to stay updated on official warnings, avoid low-visibility areas, and remain cautious near the sea due to possibly rough conditions.

Temperatures to drop further

The UAE will also feel a noticeable temperature drop as winter sets in. Daytime temperatures may fall to 26°C–27°C, while nighttime temperatures could drop to 12°C–15°C.
