The Met Office has issued fresh weather warnings across the UK, with snow and ice alerts affecting large areas and hundreds of flood notices still in force.
A yellow warning for snow and ice will be active in Scotland from 3pm on Monday until 10am on Tuesday, while a separate yellow ice warning covers extensive parts of England and Scotland from 6pm on Monday through 10am Tuesday. Northern Ireland also faces a yellow ice warning from 8pm Monday until 10am Tuesday.
According to the Met Office, rain, sleet, and hill snow will move southeastward on Monday evening and night before clearing towards the North Sea. “Snow accumulations may occur, particularly above 150–200m, but ice is expected to pose a greater hazard as temperatures drop quickly once showers pass,” the office added. Strong northwesterly winds are also expected along some North Sea coasts later Monday night into Tuesday morning.
Officials have cautioned the public about the risk of slips and falls on icy surfaces, as well as icy patches on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths.
Meanwhile, the Environment Agency has urged continued vigilance due to ongoing flood risks. England currently has 75 flood warnings—where flooding is expected—and a further 189 flood alerts, where flooding is possible. Jonathan Day, Flood Duty Manager at the agency, said over 24,000 homes and businesses have been protected, though around 330 properties have already been flooded.
Met Office operational meteorologist Dan Stroud highlighted the potential for black ice and slippery surfaces, advising people to exercise caution. “Monday will bring sunny spells and blustery showers, but overnight into Tuesday will start frosty,” he explained. “While much of Tuesday will see winter sunshine, cloud and rain will move in from the south and west late in the day, bringing a mix of rain, sleet, and hill snow across south-west England and South Wales.”
Stroud added that snow warnings could be issued as the system develops, but conditions are expected to improve towards the end of the week. “Thursday into Friday should be largely dry with some clear skies, and temperatures will turn milder by week’s end,” he said.
