UAE Revises Speed Limits Across Six Key Regions to Curb Violations and Accidents

With over 10 million speeding violations recorded in 2024, UAE authorities have announced critical speed limit changes across six major emirates. These updates aim to reduce road accidents, ensure driver safety, and prevent costly fines.

Speeding remains one of the most hazardous behaviors on UAE roads, contributing to fatal rollovers, run-overs, and collisions. In light of this, the UAE government has implemented new speed regulations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Ras Al Khaimah to enhance road safety and reduce violations.

1. Abu Dhabi Cuts Speed Limits on Major Routes
Effective April 14, 2025, Abu Dhabi Mobility will reduce the speed on two key highways. The limit on Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed International Road (E11) will drop from 160km/h to 140km/h, while the Abu Dhabi–Sweihan Road (E20) will see a reduction from 120km/h to 100km/h.

2. Enforcement of Minimum Speed on Fast Lanes in Abu Dhabi
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road now enforces a 120km/h minimum speed on the two leftmost lanes, with an upper limit of 140km/h. Drivers falling below the minimum could face a Dh400 fine, as authorities stress that slow drivers can also pose significant risks.

3. Red Pavement Markings to Highlight New Limits
Abu Dhabi City has rolled out red road markings to make speed limit changes more visible. Updated limits include:

  • Abu Dhabi–Al Ain Road (near Sas Al Nakhl): 120km/h to 100km/h
  • Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Street (near Sweihan Bridge): 140km/h to 120km/h
  • Same road (near Baniyas Cemetery): 120km/h to 100km/h
  • Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Street (near Sheikh Zayed Bridge): 120km/h to 100km/h
  • Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Road (E-12): Adjusted limits between Jubail and Saadiyat Islands

4. Dubai Revises Speed Limits on Key Arteries
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority, in collaboration with Dubai Police, announced modifications including:

  • Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street: Increased to 100km/h from Dubai Al Ain Road to Academic City Roundabout; reduced to 90km/h from the roundabout to Al Khawaneej Street.
  • Al Amardi Street: Standardized to 90km/h between Al Khawaneej Street and Emirates Road. Updated signage reflects the changes.

5. Sharjah Drops Speed on Major Corridor
In a move coordinated with Sharjah Police, the speed limit between the Abu Shaghara interchange and Al Taawun Bridge on Al Wahda and Al Ittihad Roads was lowered from 100km/h to 80km/h.

6. Ras Al Khaimah Reduces Coastal Route Speed
Since January 17, 2025, Sheikh Mohammed bin Salem Street—connecting Al Rafaa to Al Marjan Island—has had its speed limit reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h. This route serves dense residential and tourist areas including Al Rifaa, Al Jazira Al Hamra, and Mina Al Arab.

With speeding accounting for a significant portion of traffic violations and accidents, these changes highlight the government’s continued efforts to promote safer driving habits across the country. Drivers are urged to stay informed and adhere to revised limits to avoid penalties and protect lives.
