U.S. to Resume Talks with Iran After Airstrikes and Retaliation, Trump Confirms

President Donald Trump confirmed that diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran will resume shortly following a wave of military escalation in the Middle East.

“We have scheduled Iran talks. They want to talk,” Trump said during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Though he did not specify a date, Middle East Special Envoy Steve Witkoff later indicated that the talks would begin “very quickly, in the next week or so.”

The announcement comes after a period of intense hostilities between the two nations. On June 21, the U.S. military bombed three Iranian nuclear sites, aligning with Israel in its ongoing conflict with Iran. In response, Iran launched retaliatory missile strikes targeting a U.S. military base in Qatar.

Despite fears of a broader regional war, tensions appear to be easing. On June 23, President Trump announced a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran, paving the way for the renewal of diplomatic efforts.

“They want to work something out,” Trump reiterated on July 7, emphasizing that Iran’s posture had shifted significantly:

“They’re very different now than they were two weeks ago.”

Prior to the military escalation, the Trump administration had already been involved in negotiations with Iran, seeking to limit its nuclear program. The recent developments, however, added a new urgency and complexity to those discussions.
