Trump Withdraws Canada’s Invitation to Join Peace Board

US President Donald Trump has withdrawn Canada’s invitation to join his newly formed Board of Peace, marking a fresh tension between the two North American neighbours. Trump announced the move on Truth Social in a message addressed to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, without providing a reason for the decision.

The Board of Peace, described by the US as an international body for resolving conflicts with Trump as lifetime chairman, requires permanent members to pay a $1 billion membership fee—a cost Ottawa had signaled it would not cover. Earlier, Carney had indicated he would accept the invitation on principle, following his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos calling for “middle powers” to unite against coercion from larger nations.

About 35 of the roughly 60 invited countries have signed up, including Argentina, Morocco, Pakistan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, though no other permanent UN Security Council members have joined. In response to Trump’s remarks that Canada “lives because of the United States,” Carney emphasized at a Quebec speech: “Canada thrives because we are Canadians.”
