Trump Threatens to Block Opening of New US–Canada Bridge

Former US President Donald Trump has threatened to block the opening of a major new bridge connecting the United States and Canada, escalating tensions amid ongoing disputes over trade and bilateral relations.

Former US President Donald Trump has threatened to block the opening of a new six-lane bridge connecting Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, unless Canada compensates the United States and treats it with what he described as “fairness and respect.”

In a social media post on Monday, Trump stated that he would not allow the bridge to open until the United States is “fully compensated” for its contributions and Canada acknowledges the importance of the US market. Although he did not mention the bridge by name, the remarks appeared to refer to the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a major cross-border infrastructure project between the two countries.

The bridge, which has been under construction since 2018, is valued at $4.7 billion and is expected to open in early 2026, although an official opening date has not yet been announced. The project is being financed and overseen by the Canadian government and is intended to ease congestion at one of the busiest trade corridors in North America.

Trump also indicated that he plans to initiate negotiations regarding the bridge, arguing that the United States should own a significant portion of the asset due to the economic benefits generated by the US market. His comments come amid ongoing tensions between the two countries following a trade dispute and continued criticism of Canada.
