Trump Tariffs on Canada Set to Be Lifted Following House Vote

US House Votes to Reject Trump Tariffs on Canada

On Wednesday, February 12, the US House of Representatives voted 219-211 to overturn tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on Canadian goods. Six Republicans joined Democrats in approving the measure, delivering a symbolic rebuke of Trump’s trade policy.

While the vote demonstrates congressional opposition, the measure still requires Senate approval and the president’s signature to take effect. Even if it passes the Senate, Trump could veto it, and overriding the veto would require a two-thirds majority in Congress.

Trump personally warned Republicans against supporting the repeal, calling it a threat to economic and national security on his Truth Social platform.

The tariffs, initially justified under emergency powers, have targeted sectors including autos, steel, and aluminum, although exemptions under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) kept over 85% of trade tariff-free. Legal challenges to these tariffs are ongoing, with the Supreme Court expected to rule on their legitimacy.

Separately, the House also passed the SAVE America Act, requiring proof of US citizenship for voter registration and adding photo ID requirements for federal elections. Democrats criticized the legislation, arguing it could restrict voting access, while Republicans said it ensures election integrity.
