Trump Says India and Pakistan Would Be at War Without His Intervention, Cuts Russia Ultimatum to 12 Days

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has repeated his controversial claim that India and Pakistan would still be at war today if not for his intervention earlier this year.

Speaking on July 29 at his Turnberry golf course in Scotland, ahead of talks with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump said, “If I weren’t around, you’d have, right now, six major wars going on. India would be fighting with Pakistan.” He added that he used trade talks as leverage to stop the conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, following a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians.

Trump claimed that both India and Pakistan were eager to secure a trade deal with Washington and that he told them he would not proceed unless they stepped back from the brink of war. India, however, has consistently denied Trump’s role in brokering the May 10 ceasefire.

Trump also cited conflicts between Cambodia and Thailand, Serbia and Kosovo, and Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, claiming his influence helped to reduce tensions globally.

On Russia and Ukraine, Trump expressed disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of undermining potential ceasefire agreements. He noted that Russia’s ongoing missile attacks have killed civilians, including a recent strike on a nursing home in Kyiv.

Trump, who earlier gave Putin 50 days to agree to a ceasefire, announced he was now cutting that deadline to 10 to 12 days, warning of “sanctions and maybe secondary tariffs” if Russia does not comply. These tariffs could also impact countries like India that continue to trade with Russia.

Trump said he would not tolerate “nuclear dust” from escalating conflicts and emphasized the importance of U.S. leadership in preventing global wars.

He also touched on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, saying he would discuss the issue with Prime Minister Starmer. Starmer, along with European leaders, has urged Israel to lift all restrictions on aid to Gaza and has pledged to work with Jordan on air-dropping aid.

Trump’s visit to Scotland also included meetings with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, where they reportedly outlined a new EU-U.S. trade deal. He is scheduled to travel next to Aberdeenshire to inaugurate a new Trump International golf course. Trump’s mother, Mary Anne MacLeod, was born in Scotland, strengthening his personal ties to the country.
