The Trump administration is reportedly considering a sweeping reconfiguration of the United States’ diplomatic presence worldwide, potentially closing nearly 30 embassies and consulates. The move is part of a broader push to reduce federal spending and streamline international operations.
The Trump administration is weighing a major reduction in America’s diplomatic footprint by potentially closing 10 embassies and 17 consulates across key global regions, according to an internal State Department document obtained by CNN. This proposal, if enacted, would mark one of the largest diplomatic restructurings in recent US history.
Among the embassies on the proposed closure list are those in Malta, Luxembourg, Lesotho, the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, and South Sudan. The suggested consulate closures include multiple locations in France, Germany, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as diplomatic missions in the United Kingdom, South Africa, and South Korea.
The internal report outlines that the responsibilities of closed diplomatic offices would be transferred to neighboring embassies, consolidating services and streamlining operations. This shift would significantly reduce America’s physical presence in several strategically important regions.
This move is said to align with the efforts of the Department of Government Efficiency, an initiative reportedly backed by entrepreneur Elon Musk, which seeks to cut federal expenditures and reduce bureaucratic overhead.
Beyond Europe and Africa, the report also highlights downsizing diplomatic missions in Iraq and Somalia—both of which have been central to US counterterrorism strategy for years. Additionally, the plan includes introducing “FLEX-style” posts, which would feature limited staff and function under the support of larger missions such as those in Japan and Canada.
If implemented, the closures and reductions could significantly alter how the United States engages diplomatically, with concerns that such a move might weaken US influence in regions where a physical presence is vital for political, economic, and security cooperation.
