Trekking Through Wilderness Poll Officials Ensure Every Vote Counts in Kerala’s Forested Heartland

In a heartwarming display of democracy’s resilience, a team of polling officials embarks on an arduous journey through Kerala’s dense forests to ensure a bedridden 92-year-old’s vote is recorded, exemplifying the power of inclusivity in electoral processes.

Deep within the verdant forests of Kerala’s high-range district of Idukki lies the tribal village of Edamalakkudy, where the spirit of democracy shines brightly even amidst the dense wilderness. Here, 92-year-old Sivalingam, despite being bedridden, epitomizes unwavering determination as he awaits his turn to cast his vote.

For Sivalingam, voting is not just a civic duty but a testament to his commitment to democracy. To fulfill his wish, a dedicated team of nine polling officials embarked on an extraordinary 18-kilometer trek through rugged terrain and wildlife-infested forests. Their mission: to ensure that every voice, no matter how remote, is heard in the democratic chorus.

Setting out from Munnar at dawn, the team navigated through the breathtaking landscapes of Eravikulam National Park before delving into the heart of the wilderness towards Edamalakkudy. Despite facing challenges such as narrow trails and unpredictable weather, their resolve remained unshaken.

Arriving at Sivalingam’s humble abode, nestled amidst the forest, the officials encountered a poignant scene. With tears welling up in his eyes, Sivalingam, frail yet resolute, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the electoral process.

A makeshift polling booth beside his bed ensured privacy as Sivalingam exercised his democratic right, with his grandson’s assistance. The emotional farewell marked the culmination of a journey fueled by dedication to democracy’s core principles.

This remarkable endeavor underscores the Election Commission’s commitment to inclusivity, particularly in tribal regions like Edamalakkudy. Each vote, regardless of circumstance, is cherished and celebrated as a cornerstone of democracy’s strength.

As the district administration aims for 100% voter turnout in Edamalakkudy, the heroic efforts of the polling team serve as a beacon of inspiration. Their resilience and dedication echo the spirit of democracy, reaffirming that every vote indeed counts.
