In a devastating incident, a massive fire at a games arcade in Rajkot, Gujarat, has resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 24 people, according to local officials.
The inferno, which broke out on Saturday afternoon, sent flames and a thick pall of smoke soaring into the sky, engulfing the building. Eyewitnesses reported a chaotic scene as the arcade was packed with children and young people at the time of the fire.
Rajkot Police Commissioner Raju Bhargava confirmed to BBC Gujarati that 24 bodies have been sent to the civil hospital, with more potentially still trapped under the wreckage. The identification of the heavily burned bodies has proven to be a challenging task for the authorities.
Despite efforts to control the blaze, the extent of the damage has been significant. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and a special investigation team has been appointed by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to determine the origins of the tragedy.
Expressing his sorrow, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated he was “extremely distressed” by the incident and extended his condolences to the families of the victims.
