Top three underrated places to visit in Italy: Scilla, La Spezia, Salerno

[ad_1]

It feels as though everyone in Australia has had a trip to Italy this year — and I don’t blame them.

Italy is a country you can travel to over and over again with each region having their own unique history and tradition.

Whether you love the beaches, food, culture, or a cheeky espresso … there’s truly something for everyone.

But now that you have now been to the major hotspots like Rome and Milan, where to next?

After spending three months in Italy and travelling to more than 20 cities, I have narrowed down my selections to the three must-see destinations that you probably don’t know about.

Scilla

An amazing little coastal town in Calabria with pristine blue waters that is mostly undiscovered by tourists.

The best part of the beach — apart from its heavenly blue waters — is its ample space to set up for the day.

The enchanting coastal village sits on the west coast of Calabria and is also known as a charming fishing destination which is the jewel of the Costa Viola.

What to do?

Many don’t know but there is a lift (ascentore) that you can zip up to the top of the mountain for just €1 ($1.70).

The top is basically another town and the view of the coastline will without doubt blow you away.

While you’re there, check out the old castle, entry is around €4-5 but well worth it.

If you’re more interested in taking a load off, there are many bars and restaurants that overlook the coastline — an essential viewing spot for sunset.

How to get there?

It is easily accessible by an intercity train from Catania/Messina (four hours) or from Rome/ Naples (five hours) where you can then jump on a regional train.

When booking a train ticket from Sicily, purchase one with the ferry included for convenience — as the train will then dock itself on the ferry to cross to the mainland from Sicily.

However, be weary of where your accommodation is booked because if it is at the top of the mountain, it is practically unwalkable with luggage from the station.

So, ensure you have the correct directions to walk to the lift (ascentore) or organise a pick-up.

La Spezia

La Spezia is located in the Ligurian region. It is picturesque port town that has very relaxed vibe.

If you want to avoid the chaos and hustle of the other major Italian cities, La Spezia is the perfect base to whip around.

What to do?

I highly suggest to make the mini trek up to Castello San Girogio and check out the magical views of the town, port and church.

But more importantly, be sure to visit the Cinque Terre beach towns which are only a 30 to 60 minute train ride away.

If you’re feeling adventurous you can walk from one town to another, or easily make a day trip to Genoa or Pisa (if you haven’t passed through on the way over).

How to get there?

La Spezia sits roughly in the middle of Milan/ Rome so you can easily link up a trip.

If you are coming from Milan head via Genoa for two nights or if you are coming from Rome, go via Pisa/Florence — all with multiple trains/ buses daily.

Train tickets to the Cinque Terre towns can also be purchased online for around €5.

Salerno

Salerno is a port city southeast of Naples. It is a quaint little town surrounded by mountains and a perfect location to zip around some of the most famous tourist destinations. You will more affordable accommodation and finding experiences.

What to do?

The ancient city, built on the ruins of a Roman temple, is also known for its tranquil waterfront.

There is a pedestrian walk directly on the beach that is divided across multiple lanes from the old town centre to the tourist harbour of Piazza della Concordia.

If the Amalfi Coast is on your mind, you have two options to get there — either by bus or ferry.

The bus is roughly €10 for a return ticket, but keep in mind it can be rammed to the brim in Summer. with travel times almost doubling to two hours or more.

If you want to head to the historic Pompeii (right), it’s an easy 40 minute train ride from the Salerno station.

How to get there?

Salerno station has a great link up from the south (Sicily/ Calabria) but commonly Naples is only an hour away by train.
