TikTok has successfully finalized a deal to separate its US operations from its global business, ensuring the popular short-video platform can continue operating in America. The move ends a years-long dispute between Washington and Beijing that began under former President Donald Trump, who had attempted to ban the app over national security concerns.
Under the agreement, TikTok’s powerful recommendation algorithm—previously trained on global data—will now be licensed to US owners and operate solely on American user data. While experts expect this to bring changes to the app, the precise impact on its 200 million US users remains uncertain.
The deal also averts a previously scheduled ban set for January 2025, which would have forced China-based ByteDance to divest its US operations to American investors.
