Three More Chinese Nationals Arrested in Galle Over Online Scams

In a significant move to combat the rising trend of cybercrime in Sri Lanka, three Chinese nationals were arrested in Ginthota, Galle, for their involvement in online scam operations. The suspects, aged 33 and 38, were staying at a hotel when the Galle Police conducted a raid based on intelligence they had received.

The raid resulted in the seizure of several pieces of evidence, including five mobile phones, four bank cards, and a foreign passport that did not belong to any of the suspects. These items are now being examined to trace any potential links to fraudulent financial activities. The suspects were taken into custody under charges related to cybercrime, and investigations are ongoing to uncover the full scope of the online scams they were involved in.

A Growing Cybercrime Problem

This arrest is part of a broader crackdown on foreign criminal networks involved in online scams, a growing problem that has targeted both locals and international victims. Sri Lankan authorities have stepped up efforts to tackle cybercrime in recent years, with a series of arrests involving foreign nationals operating within the country. This recent operation in Galle signals the commitment of law enforcement agencies to prevent these fraudulent activities, which often involve complex schemes to steal money through fake websites, phishing emails, and other deceptive online platforms.

Online scams, particularly those involving foreign nationals, have become increasingly sophisticated, with perpetrators using technology to evade detection and exploit vulnerabilities in financial systems. Police believe that this group may have been running operations from within the country, possibly linked to larger international cybercrime syndicates.

According to police sources, investigations are ongoing to determine how long the suspects had been operating in Sri Lanka and the extent of their involvement in the scams. Authorities are also working to trace any local contacts who may have assisted the suspects in facilitating their operations. The discovery of multiple bank cards suggests the suspects may have been engaged in money laundering or transferring funds obtained illegally.

Sri Lankan law enforcement has intensified collaboration with international crime-fighting agencies, recognizing that cybercriminals often operate across borders. The police have not ruled out the possibility of more arrests as they continue to pursue leads and gather evidence.

Public Caution Advised

Authorities have also issued a warning to the public to remain vigilant against online scams, which have seen a rise during the pandemic as more people engage in online transactions. Cybercriminals often pose as legitimate companies or individuals, tricking people into providing personal information, bank details, or making payments to fraudulent accounts.

With this latest arrest, Sri Lankan police reaffirm their commitment to combating cybercrime and ensuring that perpetrators, both local and foreign, face justice for their actions. The suspects will be prosecuted under Sri Lanka’s cybercrime and financial fraud laws, and the authorities hope this serves as a deterrent to others involved in similar illegal activities.

The public is encouraged to report any suspicious online activity to the authorities to aid in the ongoing battle against cybercrime in the country.
