Shehani Kahandawala has carved a significant niche in Sri Lanka’s entertainment industry as an actress, television host, singer, and model. Starting as a child television presenter, she gradually ascended to become one of the country’s beloved television actresses, particularly known for her roles in the popular serials “Sujatha,” “Sanda Pini Wassa,” and “Sihini.”

Early Life and Background

Born in Colombo, Shehani is the only child of Wasantha Kahandawala and Thamara Perera. Growing up, Shehani did not participate in drama or music activities at school, though she studied music as a subject until her Advanced Levels. Her interest in the arts may have been influenced by her family’s musical background, with both her grandmother and father having a talent for singing.

Career Beginnings

Shehani’s journey in the entertainment industry began in 2013 when she started working as a freelance television presenter for TV Derana, hosting the children’s program “Trim Trim.” During the same year, she appeared in the music video “Oba Ma Hamuwuna Da” sung by Sashika Nisansala, which significantly boosted her popularity. This initial exposure led to more appearances in music videos over the subsequent years.

Breakthrough and Rise to Fame

In 2013, Shehani made her acting debut with the television serial “Acid,” directed by Chamara Janaraj Peiris, where she played the character “Senuri.” Her significant breakthrough came in 2015 when she was cast in the titular role of “Sujatha” in the serial of the same name, replacing Nehara Peiris. This role turned out to be a pivotal moment in her career, establishing her as a household name.

Following the success of “Sujatha,” Shehani appeared in several other notable serials. In 2016, she starred in “Warna,” and in 2017, she took on the role of “Madhavee” in “Sanda Pini Wassa.” That same year, she showcased her versatility by hosting the reality show “Hiru Super Hero” on Hiru TV and joining the comedy serial “Mal Hathai” as “Ashawari.”

Continued Success and Recognition

Shehani’s talent continued to shine through in various roles and projects. In 2018, she participated in the second season of the reality show “Hiru Mega Stars” and starred in the television serials “Nebaraya” and “Package.” Her growing influence was recognized when she became the official LUX ambassador for Sri Lanka in 2019, a role that included attending a workshop in the United Kingdom. Additionally, she featured in the music video “Mihiravi” by Romesh Sugathapala and appeared in the Hindi song “Anjaana” sung by Bollywood singer Rajdeep Chatterjee.

Recent Work

In 2020, Shehani took on the lead role in the television soap opera “Sihini,” continuing to captivate audiences with her compelling performances. Her journey from a child presenter to a multifaceted star is a testament to her talent, dedication, and versatility.
