In many US states, 14-year-olds are permitted to drive solo if granted a special hardship licence – although enjoying a new life of driving freedom is probably the last thing they’re doing, given a hardship licence requires extreme circumstances and disadvantages. This might involve driving farm vehicles, transporting sick family members to treatment, or getting to school in an area so rural there’s no school bus service. Hardship licences, fortunately, are exceptionally rare.
