Although he studied well up to grade nine, his radical passion for music led to a decline in his academic performance during his Advanced Level years. Dinesh candidly admits that he received miserably low marks. Influenced by his friends, he initially selected art drawing for his Advanced Levels due to the high number of girls in the class. Later, he shifted to music, a decision that would shape his future. Inspired by the renowned musician Nadeeka Guruge, a former student of his alma mater, Dinesh formed a small band with a few classmates.
One of the early defining moments in Dinesh’s musical journey was when his band organized a musical show in a small hall, expecting a large audience. To their surprise, the only attendees were the parents of the band members. Despite this setback, Dinesh’s determination did not waver. During additional chemistry classes for his Advanced Levels, each student had to perform on stage. Driven by the desire to impress a girl he liked, Dinesh learned to play the guitar, mastering four or five chords to perform Dayan Vitharana’s “Obe Susum Pawan.” This marked the beginning of his serious pursuit of guitar playing and his journey as a performer.
