Thailand and Australia Consider Mutual Visa Exemption to Boost Ties

Thailand and Australia are exploring the possibility of implementing a mutual visa exemption scheme aimed at strengthening relations and facilitating travel and business opportunities between the two countries.

During a recent meeting between Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and Australia’s Governor-General David Hurley in Bangkok on February 14, the proposal for a mutual visa exemption was discussed as a means to foster closer ties and enhance travel and business exchanges. Prime Minister Srettha emphasized Thailand’s commitment to ensuring the safety of travelers and creating favorable conditions for tourism, while also inviting Australian visitors to explore health-oriented travel experiences in Thailand.

Additionally, Prime Minister Srettha proposed intensifying cooperation to bolster the Thailand-Australia Free Trade Agreement (TAFTA) and invited Australian investors to explore opportunities in green energy and intelligent technology sectors. Governor-General Hurley expressed optimism about Thailand’s economic potential and highlighted the upcoming ASEAN-Australia Special Summit as an opportunity for Thailand to showcase its economic prospects on a regional scale.

Both parties expressed satisfaction with ongoing military cooperation, including joint exercises and staff training initiatives, which are expected to enhance defense readiness against emerging security challenges.

In related developments, Thailand recently entered into a bilateral agreement with China to implement a reciprocal visa waiver, signaling its commitment to boosting tourism and strengthening ties with key partners. This proactive approach builds on previous visa waiver policies extended to visitors from China, India, and Taiwan, reflecting Thailand’s efforts to expand its global connectivity and diplomatic relations.
