Tesla to End Model S and X Production in Q2 2026

Tesla will bring production of its Model S and Model X to an end in the second quarter of 2026, closing the chapter on the company’s longest-running vehicles as it pivots toward robotics and automation.

CEO Elon Musk confirmed the decision during Tesla’s fourth-quarter 2025 earnings call, explaining that the factory space currently used for the two models will be repurposed for manufacturing the Optimus humanoid robot. The move underscores Tesla’s growing focus on an autonomous, AI-driven future.

Sales of the Model S and X have steadily fallen in recent years, particularly when compared with the strong demand for the Model 3 and Model Y. Although deliveries briefly rose in 2024 due to the inclusion of Cybertruck figures, estimates suggest only a modest share came from the premium sedan and SUV.

Once considered Tesla’s technological pioneers, the Model S and X introduced many innovations that later became standard across the lineup. Their retirement signals a strategic shift as Tesla prioritizes newer platforms and emerging technologies.

The two vehicles are expected to remain in production until Q2 2026, after which Tesla will focus resources on scaling Optimus and its next generation of products.
