A 14-year-old boy is in a critical condition after being bitten by a shark near Thursday Island off the Far North Queensland coast on Thursday evening.
Emergency crews were called to Cook Esplanade just before 6:30 p.m. following reports of a shark attack. The teenager was reportedly fishing with friends when he entered the water and was suddenly mauled by the shark, sustaining severe injuries to his chest.
His friends acted quickly, pulling him from the water and calling for help. Paramedics provided immediate medical assistance before rushing him to Thursday Island Hospital. He was later airlifted to Townsville University Hospital for emergency treatment, where he remains fighting for his life.
Authorities are investigating the incident and have urged the public to exercise caution in the area as shark activity has been reported in recent weeks along Queensland’s northern waters.
