Tamil Genocide Monument inaugurated in Canada despite Sri Lanka’s objection

A monument commemorating the victims of the final stages of the Sri Lankan war was officially inaugurated on May 10 at Chinguacousy Park, marking what community leaders called a pivotal moment for remembrance and justice.

The Tamil Genocide Monument, a 4.8-meter stainless steel structure, was approved by Brampton City Council in early 2024.

“This monument stands as a memorial to the thousands of innocent lives that were taken during the Sri Lankan government’s genocide against the Tamil people,” Canadian Justice Minister Gary Anandasangaree said on X, formerly Twitter. “It also honours the strength and resilience of Tamil communities around the world.”

The project was spearheaded by the National Council of Canadian Tamils, the Brampton Tamil Association, and the Brampton Tamil Seniors Association.

Its construction has drawn protest from the Sri Lankan government, which summoned Canada’s High Commissioner in Colombo to formally object in 2024.
