Swiss open criminal case against managers of ski resort bar after deadly fire

Swiss police have identified the first four victims of a devastating fire that broke out at a crowded bar in the alpine resort town of Crans-Montana, turning New Year celebrations into a national tragedy.

The victims, all citizens of Switzerland, were aged between 16 and 21. Authorities said the process of identifying the remaining victims is continuing, as families wait anxiously for news of their loved ones.

The fire erupted shortly after 1.30 a.m. on January 1 at a popular nightlife venue packed with revellers. At least 40 people were killed and more than 100 others injured, several of them critically, as flames and smoke spread rapidly through the premises.

Emergency services described chaotic scenes as survivors were rushed to hospitals across the region. Investigators are examining the cause of the blaze while officials have pledged full support to victims’ families and those affected.

The tragedy has sparked renewed calls for stricter fire safety measures in entertainment venues, particularly during peak holiday seasons.
