Sri Lanka, home to the world’s finest cinnamon, has added another milestone to its proud heritage with the launch of Sweet Wood – the world’s first clinically proven Ceylon Cinnamon shot.
The innovation comes from SaaraLabs, a research and development arm of the highly established spice export company SDS Spices. Founded in 2015 by Colombo residents Ranmali Abeyasinghe and Viraj De Silva, SaaraLabs was built on the legacy of a family that has been shaping the global spice trade since 1931.
Reinventing Cinnamon for the Global Stage
After years of research, clinical testing, and trials, SaaraLabs unveiled Sweet Wood in 2024, producing the extract in-house at its state-of-the-art facility in southern Sri Lanka.
Sweet Wood made its global debut at SIAL Paris 2024, one of the world’s leading food innovation exhibitions. It not only introduced Sri Lankan cinnamon to an international nutraceutical audience but was also selected as a finalist for the Most Innovative Product Award — a recognition that underscored its groundbreaking blend of tradition and science.
“Sweet Wood represents innovation, an all-female team, and nature’s benefits in a bottle,” said Ranmali Abeyasinghe, Founder & Managing Director of SaaraLabs, who has been at the forefront of this pioneering venture.
A Family Legacy of Spice Innovation
The cinnamon journey of SDS Spices began in 1931, when Sherman De Silva, Viraj’s grandfather, envisioned taking Sri Lanka’s spices to the world. Decades later, the third generation has reimagined this legacy with a nutraceutical approach – moving beyond raw spice exports to value-added, clinically proven health products.
As Managing Director of SDS Spices, Viraj De Silva has expanded the company’s global presence since 2018, modernized operations, and promoted sustainability-driven practices. His mission remains clear: to position Sri Lankan cinnamon at the pinnacle of the global wellness industry.
Science Meets Nature
Backed by one of the largest clinical trials ever conducted on cinnamon, Sweet Wood is designed to support:
