India secured the three-match Youth ODI series 2–0, providing a timely boost ahead of the ICC Under-19 World Cup, which begins on January 15 in Zimbabwe and Namibia.
A rapid half-century from Vaibhav Suryavanshi and a four-wicket haul by Kishan Singh powered India Under-19 to an emphatic eight-wicket victory via the DLS method over South Africa Under-19 in a rain-affected second ODI at Willowmoore Park, Benoni, on Monday.
India’s bowlers laid the foundation for the win, with Kishan returning figures of 4 for 46 and RS Ambrish claiming two wickets as the hosts were limited to 245 runs in their allotted 50 overs. Jason Rowles was the standout performer for South Africa, scoring 114, but lacked support as Indian bowlers struck regularly to curb the scoring rate.
Chasing a revised target of 174 in 27 overs following multiple rain and lightning delays, stand-in captain Suryavanshi launched a blistering assault at the top of the order. The 14-year-old smashed 68 off just 24 deliveries, including one four and 10 towering sixes, giving India a flying start.
Suryavanshi also etched his name into the record books by reaching his half-century in only 15 balls — the fastest in Youth ODI history — adding to his earlier achievement of holding the record for the quickest century in the format.
After his dismissal, Vedant Trivedi (31 not out) and Abhigyan Kundu (48 not out) stitched together an unbroken 81-run partnership for the third wicket to guide India to victory in the 24th over.
The final match of the series is scheduled to be played at the same venue on Wednesday.
