Schools across the UAE are tightening their enforcement of the longstanding mobile phone ban, notifying parents that students caught with phones on campus will face longer confiscation periods.
Messages sent via text and WhatsApp to parents specify that any mobile device found on school grounds will be held for one month, with repeated violations potentially leading to the phone being retained until the end of the school year.
The initiative aligns with Ministerial Decision No. 851 of 2018, which prohibits students from bringing mobile phones to school. Officials clarified that tablets, such as iPads, are still allowed but only for educational purposes and under teacher supervision. Using them during breaks or outside class hours is considered a violation of school rules.
School authorities explained that the stricter enforcement is intended to enhance discipline and learning outcomes. Teachers highlighted that frequent phone use can lower focus and comprehension, especially in subjects requiring sustained attention like mathematics. Restricting access to personal devices, they say, encourages students to participate more actively in lessons.
Parents were asked to support the schools by ensuring children do not carry phones to campus and by reinforcing the rules at home.
