Statistics Canada to Release August Labour Force Survey Amid Job Market Uncertainty

Statistics Canada is set to release its August labour force survey this morning, offering the latest snapshot of the country’s job market.

Ahead of the report, a Reuters poll of economists expects a gain of 10,000 jobs for the month, while projecting the unemployment rate to rise to seven per cent, according to LSEG Data & Analytics.

The July survey painted a weaker picture, with 41,000 jobs lost and the unemployment rate climbing to 6.9 per cent.

The upcoming figures come on the heels of last week’s announcement that the Canadian economy contracted in the second quarter, as U.S. tariffs and ongoing trade uncertainty weighed heavily on exports.

The report will also serve as an important indicator ahead of the Bank of Canada’s next interest rate decision on Sept. 17.
