Tourism State Minister Diana Gamage has advocated for a change in the name ‘spa’, emphasizing that its current usage does not reflect the professionalism and wellness focus associated with such establishments.
Tourism State Minister Diana Gamage has urged for a reevaluation of the name ‘spa’, contending that its prevalent usage does not align with the high standards of professionalism and wellness typically associated with such facilities.
Speaking to the media, Minister Gamage emphasized that the term ‘spa’ implies a level of professionalism and denotes a center dedicated to wellness. As such, she underscored the importance of refraining from using the term inappropriately and disrespectfully.
“The indiscriminate use of the term ‘spa’ undermines the professionalism of individuals working in these establishments and detracts from the industry’s reputation,” Minister Gamage stated, advocating for a more respectful and appropriate naming convention.
She further highlighted the social stigma attached to the term, noting instances where individuals working in legitimate spa facilities are unfairly associated with prostitution due to the misuse of the name.
In light of these concerns, Minister Gamage asserted that a change in nomenclature is imperative to preserve the dignity and integrity of the spa industry. She emphasized that establishments should not be permitted to use the term ‘spa’ without adhering to the industry’s standards and values.
Responding to questions regarding the legalization of prostitution and its association with late-night bars, Minister Gamage expressed her opposition to the notion of bars facilitating prostitution activities.
“I do not support the notion of late-night bars being venues for prostitution,” Minister Gamage stated firmly, highlighting the need for a realistic and pragmatic approach to addressing such issues.
Acknowledging the persistence of prostitution, Minister Gamage stressed the importance of engaging in constructive dialogue and adopting realistic strategies to address the challenges posed by this age-old profession.
“It is crucial to confront these realities candidly and pragmatically, as prostitution continues to exist within our society,” she concluded.
