Sri Lanka’s Inland Revenue Department Records Highest Tax Revenue in Its History

Sri Lanka’s Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has achieved a historic milestone, surpassing Rs. 2 trillion in tax revenue for the first time and strengthening the government’s financial position ahead of 2026.

The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has announced that it has recorded the highest tax revenue collection in its history, reaching Rs. 2,002,241 million as of November 17, 2025. According to the official statement released on November 18, this figure marks an increase of Rs. 60,079 million when compared to the total revenue collected in 2024, which stood at Rs. 1,942,162 million.

Officials noted that exceeding the Rs. 2 trillion mark within just eleven months demonstrates a significant boost to the government’s fiscal strength during a period of intense economic restructuring. The IRD emphasized that this achievement reflects the growing effectiveness of tax administration and the increasing compliance of taxpayers.

Commissioner General of Inland Revenue, Rukdevi P. H. Fernando, extended her gratitude to taxpayers for meeting their obligations under tax laws, noting that their commitment has directly supported national development and public welfare initiatives. She also acknowledged the efforts of officials across state and private institutions whose cooperation played a crucial role in reaching this milestone.

The Commissioner General further highlighted that continuous taxpayer compliance and strong institutional collaboration were essential elements behind this unprecedented revenue performance.
