Sri Lanka’s Healthcare Gets a Billion-Yen Boost from Japan

Sri Lanka’s National Hospital—regarded as the country’s leading government medical institution—received a significant upgrade this week with the installation of state-of-the-art medical equipment donated by the Government of Japan.

A high-level inspection of the new facilities was carried out by Minister of Health Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, accompanied by Akio Isomata, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, and a delegation of Japanese officials.

The equipment, valued at JPY 1 billion, includes a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine, CT scanner, Cath Lab unit, and a wide range of surgical and diagnostic tools. These contributions are expected to strengthen the hospital’s Diagnostic Imaging Centre, Emergency Treatment Unit, and Accident and Emergency Department, improving both emergency response and outpatient care.

Minister Jayatissa expressed his deep gratitude to Japan, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in advancing Sri Lanka’s healthcare system. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing the National Hospital through foreign partnerships and modern medical technologies.

Ambassador Isomata underscored Japan’s long-standing friendship with Sri Lanka, pledging continued support for the country’s healthcare development and overall well-being.

This donation marks another milestone in Sri Lanka–Japan relations, strengthening not just healthcare, but also the enduring bond between the two nations.
