Sri Lanka’s First FIBA Women Referee: Premila Fernando’s Journey in Basketball

Premila Fernando has carved an inspiring path in basketball, becoming Sri Lanka’s first FIBA Women Referee. Her journey is marked by achievements that span refereeing, coaching, and playing, reflecting her deep passion and dedication to the sport.

Fernando holds a Level 2 Referee qualification from Basketball Victoria, Australia, and has achieved the prestigious FIBA Referee License, gaining international recognition. She officiated in significant events such as the 21st FIBA Asia Under-18 Girls Championship in Malaysia (2012) and the 2nd FIBA Asia 3X3 Youth Games in China (2013). Her expertise also shone at the Pan Pacific Masters Games in Brisbane, Australia, in 2016, 2018, and 2022.

Beyond her referee duties, Fernando has made significant contributions to basketball development. She officiated in the Kumon National Junior Classic tournament in Australia and served as Assistant Coach of the Hampton Park Pioneers Under 12 team. Her commitment to nurturing young talent led her to found the BE BALLERS BASKETBALL ACADEMY in Melbourne, where she mentors around 40 young players across two locations.

Fernando’s impact extends to her playing career, where she made history as the first Sri Lankan female player in the BIGV Basketball League in Australia. She captained the Sri Lanka national Basketball Women’s Team and achieved accolades such as being named Asia’s second-best player in the 22nd FIBA Asia Championship in Korea (2007). Her on-court prowess earned her recognition as the Best Player in various tournaments, highlighting her skill and leadership.
