In a tragic turn of events, the involvement of Sri Lankan war veterans in the Russia-Ukraine conflict has come to light, with police investigations confirming the deaths of at least eight individuals. These veterans, who once served their nation, have fallen victim to human trafficking schemes, finding themselves embroiled in a conflict thousands of miles away from home.
According to statements released by Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa, the casualties include six who perished in Russia and two in Ukraine. Shockingly, it has been revealed that these individuals were part of a larger group of 83 war veterans who were clandestinely sent to the conflict zone by human traffickers.
The involvement of Sri Lankan nationals in the conflict has sparked a nationwide investigation, shedding light on the disturbing activities of human trafficking networks operating within the country. DIG Thalduwa highlighted that out of the total sent, 60 were deployed to Russia, while 23 were sent to Ukraine with the intention of participating in the conflict.
The Sri Lankan authorities, notably the Criminal Investigations Department, have intensified efforts to dismantle these trafficking rings. Recent arrests, including those of a former Army Major General and a Sergeant Major, underscore the gravity of the situation. These individuals stand accused of orchestrating schemes to exploit retired war veterans for profit, sending them into the heart of a war zone under false pretenses.
This isn’t the first instance of such illicit activities being uncovered. Earlier arrests, including that of an Army Major General, have highlighted the persistence of these trafficking operations. The involvement of high-ranking military officials adds another layer of complexity to the investigation, revealing the extent to which these networks have infiltrated various sectors of society.
The Ministry of Defence has also weighed in on the matter, confirming the deaths and injuries sustained by retired war veterans who were unwittingly drawn into mercenary groups operating in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. These individuals, who once served their country with honor, have become pawns in a larger game of exploitation and greed.
As investigations continue, there is a pressing need for greater vigilance and oversight to prevent further tragedies. The plight of these Sri Lankan war veterans serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict and the lengths to which unscrupulous individuals will go to exploit vulnerable populations for personal gain. It is imperative that swift and decisive action be taken to bring those responsible to justice and to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens.
