President Ranil Wickremesinghe of Sri Lanka commenced an official visit to Australia today to attend the Seventh Indian Ocean Conference (IOC) in Perth, affirming Sri Lanka’s proactive engagement in fostering regional dialogue and collaboration within the Indian Ocean Region.

Invited by the India Foundation and the Government of Australia, President Wickremesinghe’s presence at the conference underscores Sri Lanka’s commitment to promoting stability and sustainable development in the Indian Ocean. As a keynote speaker, President Wickremesinghe is poised to contribute to pivotal discussions aimed at charting a course for regional cooperation among 40 participating nations.

Accompanying the President is Foreign Minister Ali Sabry, who will address the plenary session focusing on “Our Blue Future,” highlighting Sri Lanka’s dedication to preserving shared ocean resources and promoting environmental sustainability.

Organized by the India Foundation in collaboration with India’s Ministry of External Affairs and the Australian Government, the conference serves as a vital platform for deliberating on pressing regional issues and identifying opportunities for collective action. Supported by esteemed institutions such as the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Singapore, and Perth-US Asia Centre, the event aims to shape a comprehensive roadmap for the future of the Indian Ocean Region.

President Wickremesinghe’s participation reaffirms Sri Lanka’s commitment to proactive regional diplomacy and its ongoing efforts to address common challenges for the mutual benefit of Indian Ocean nations. With Sri Lanka’s previous hosting of the second edition of the Indian Ocean Conference in 2017, under Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s leadership, the country continues to play an active role in advancing regional cooperation and stability.
