Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has issued a stark warning to businesses in Sri Lanka, highlighting a new wave of malware attacks targeting gamers. These incidents, if left unchecked, could have serious implications for corporate cybersecurity.
The malware, often in the form of infostealers, infects personal devices used for gaming and can potentially compromise corporate data if those devices are also used for work. Experts urge individuals who suspect malware on their systems to run a thorough antivirus scan immediately.
Once a device is confirmed secure, users are advised to change all potentially compromised passwords and adopt strong, unique ones for each account. Digital hygiene—such as avoiding the use of corporate emails for personal accounts and refraining from downloading unverified software—is now more important than ever.
Kaspersky also recommends that companies invest in services like Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence, which monitors the dark web for signs of compromised corporate credentials. In addition, deploying a powerful endpoint protection system can help detect and neutralize malware threats before they cause harm.
Kaspersky expert Tretyak emphasized the blurred line between personal and corporate life in today’s digital world, stating:
“You may not rest, there are monsters nearby”—a famous gaming quote that now eerily applies to cyber threats lurking in the background.
This research is a wake-up call for businesses and employees alike: even a hobby like gaming can become a gateway for cyberattacks that endanger entire organizations.
