Sri Lankan Business Tycoon Harry Jayawardena Passes Away at 82

D.H.S. Jayawardena, widely known as Harry Jayawardena, one of Sri Lanka’s most influential and formidable businessmen, passed away peacefully earlier today at the age of 82. His daughter, Clarinda Sanjivani Jayawardena, announced his passing on Facebook, stating:

“My father, D.H.S. Jayawardena (17/08/1942 – 03/02/2025), passed away peacefully this morning. Funeral details will be shared soon.”

A Business Empire Built on Vision and Strategy

Harry Jayawardena was a towering figure in Sri Lanka’s corporate world, having built a multi-billion-rupee business empire across various industries, including liquor, banking, tourism, plantations, and logistics.

As the Chairman of the Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka (DCSL), Jayawardena controlled the nation’s largest spirits manufacturer, playing a pivotal role in shaping Sri Lanka’s beverage industry. His leadership saw DCSL expand into an economic powerhouse, driving massive growth in the alcohol and beverage sector.

He was also the Chairman of Aitken Spence, one of Sri Lanka’s largest diversified conglomerates, spanning hotels, maritime logistics, and power generation. Under his stewardship, Aitken Spence Hotels became a leading force in Sri Lanka’s tourism and hospitality sector, expanding regionally.

Additionally, Jayawardena played a key role in banking, serving as the Chairman of Hatton National Bank (HNB), where he helped drive innovation and financial growth, cementing HNB’s position as a leader in Sri Lanka’s banking sector.

His strategic business acumen and aggressive investment approach made him a dominant figure in Sri Lanka’s corporate landscape, earning him both respect and controversy over the years.
