Sri Lanka to Roll Out Digital e-NICs by April 2026 Using MOSIP System

Sri Lanka will officially launch electronic National Identity Cards (e-NICs) by April 2026, according to Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Eranga Weeraratne. The initiative, which was originally conceived in 2012, aims to modernize the country’s identity verification system through full digitization.

Weeraratne emphasized that continuing to use plastic ID cards has a negative impact on the environment, and stressed the importance of transitioning to a more sustainable, secure, and efficient digital platform.

The digital ID framework will be implemented using the Modular Open Source Identity Platform (MOSIP)—a globally recognized open-source identity system that allows for flexibility, data protection, and scalability.

With digital identification becoming a cornerstone of secure governance and service delivery across the world, Sri Lanka’s adoption of e-NICs represents a major leap forward in embracing digital transformation and enhancing national infrastructure.
