In a sensational display of grit and teamwork, Sri Lanka Women chased down a target of 236 to defeat South Africa by five wickets in Colombo, marking their fourth-highest successful run chase in women’s ODI history.
Young seamer Malki Madara, in only her second ODI, was on fire with 4 for 50, while debutant Dewmi Vihanga bagged 3 wickets to restrict South Africa to 235. Despite a spirited 61 from Annerie Dercksen* and 46 from Lara Goodall, South Africa never fully recovered from early wickets and failed to build lasting partnerships.
In response, Sri Lanka lost their star batter Chamari Athapaththu early, but Hasini Perera and Vishmi Gunaratne laid a solid platform. The match turned when Harshitha Samarawickrama (77) and Kavisha Dilhari (61) combined for a match-winning 128-run partnership, expertly controlling the tempo and dismantling South Africa’s spin attack.
Despite late wickets, Sri Lanka sealed victory with 21 balls to spare, continuing their strong run in the tri-series and leaving South Africa to reassess after a second consecutive defeat.
The victory not only showcased Sri Lanka’s rising depth in talent but also proved that this young team is ready to take on giants with confidence, composure, and flair.
